Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining Your HGV / LGV Licence

  1. Minimum Age:
    • You must be at least 18 years old to commence HGV / LGV training.
  1. Licence Requirements:
    • Before starting HGV / LGV training, you need to hold a valid car driving licence in the UK.
  1. Medical Examination:
    • Pass a medical examination conducted by a registered medical practitioner to ensure you are physically fit for professional driving.
  1. Provisional HGV/LGV Licence:
    • Apply for a provisional HGV licence from the DVLA before learning to drive big trucks on the road. This allows practical training.
  1. Theory Test:
    • It’s crucial to pass the HGV/LGV theory test, which includes multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests. This evaluates your knowledge of road safety, traffic rules, and truck/lorry-related information.
  1. Practical Training:
    • After completing theory training and receiving DVSA test results, undergo practical training with a DVSA-certified instructor. This increases the chances of passing the practical test.
  1. Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence):
    • For Category C and C+E drivers, complete the initial Driver CPC, covering theory tests and practical demonstrations. It’s a mandatory step to operate an HGV professionally.
  1. CPC Periodic Training:
    • After obtaining the initial Driver CPC, complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years at approved centres to stay updated and maintain skills.

Once all tests and training are successfully completed, you can upgrade your provisional licence to a full HGV licence.
