To obtain your professional HGV/LGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle/Large Goods Vehicle) licence, you must meet the following requirements:

Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old to begin HGV/LGV training.

Licence Requirements: Before starting your HGV/LGV training in the UK, you must already have a valid car driving licence.

Medical Examination: You are required to undergo a medical examination administered by a registered medical practitioner to ensure that you are physically fit for the demands of professional driving.

Provisional HGV/LGV Licence- Before undergoing practical training for driving large trucks on public roads, individuals typically need to obtain a provisional Heavy Goods Vehicle/Large Goods Vehicle (HGV/LGV) licence. This licence can be acquired through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Theory Test-  Passing the HGV/LGV theory test is crucial, as it assesses knowledge of road safety, traffic regulations, and vehicle-specific information through multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests.

Practical Training- Once you have completed your theoretical training and received your DVSA test results, the next step is to undergo practical training by operating a real HGV vehicle. During this phase, you will be instructed by a DVSA certified and experienced professional, which will significantly increase your likelihood of passing the practical test. When you feel ready, you can schedule the practical test, and with thorough training, you stand a good chance of passing on your first attempt.

Initial Driver CPC (certificate of professional competence)- New drivers applying for a Category C and C+E HGV licence is required to complete the initial Driver CPC. This mandatory certification includes theory tests with multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests, as well as practical tests such as the CPC Module 4 practical demonstration and the CPC Module 2 case studies test. Completion of the initial Driver CPC is necessary to operate an HGV professionally.

CPC Periodic training- After completing the initial Driver CPC, it is essential to undergo 35 hours of periodic training every five years at approved training centers. This training is designed to keep professional drivers updated on industry changes and maintain their high level of competence.

Upon completing the necessary tests and training, you will be able to upgrade your provisional licence to a full HGV licence.
