Here’s a step-by-step guide for obtaining your professional HGV / LGV licence in the UK:

  1. Minimum Age:
    • You must be at least 18 years old to start HGV / LGV training.
  2. Licence Requirements:
    • Before starting HGV / LGV training, you need to have a car driving licence in the UK.
  3. Medical Examination:
    • Undergo a medical examination by a registered medical practitioner to ensure you are physically fit for professional driving.
  4. Provisional HGV / LGV Licence:
    • Apply for a provisional HGV / LGV licence from the DVLA before learning to drive large trucks on the road. This allows you to receive practical training.
  5. Theory Test:
    • Pass the HGV / LGV theory test, which includes multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests. This assesses your knowledge of road safety, traffic rules, and truck-related information.
  6. Practical Training:
    • After completing theory training and receiving your DVSA test results, engage in practical training with a DVSA-certified instructor. This phase prepares you for the practical test and increases your chances of passing on the first attempt.
  7. Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence):
    • For Category C and C+E drivers, complete the initial Driver CPC to obtain a full HGV licence. This mandatory step includes theory tests, a practical demonstration test (CPC Module 2), and a case studies test (CPC Module 4).
  8. CPC Periodic Training:
    • After the initial Driver CPC, complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years at approved training centres. This ongoing training ensures you stay updated on industry changes and maintain a high level of competence.

Once you have successfully completed all tests and training, can upgrade your provisional licence to a full HGV licence.
