Steps to Obtain Your Professional HGV / LGV Licence:

    1. Minimum Age Requirement:
    • Start your HGV / LGV training when you’re at least 18 years old.
    1. Licence Prerequisite:
    • Before beginning HGV / LGV training, make sure you already have a car driving licence in the UK.
    1. Medical Examination:
    • Undergo a medical examination by a registered practitioner to ensure you’re physically fit for professional driving.
    1. Provisional HGV / LGV Licence:
    • Obtain a provisional HGV / LGV licence from the DVLA before learning to drive big trucks on the road. This allows for practical on-road training.
    1. Theory Test:
    • Pass the HGV / LGV theory test, covering multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests. It assesses your knowledge of road safety, traffic rules, and truck-related information.
    1. Practical Training:
    • After completing theory training and receiving DVSA test results, step into a real HGV vehicle for practical training. Learn from a DVSA-certified instructor to increase your chances of passing the practical test successfully.
    1. Initial Driver CPC:
    • New drivers for Category C and C+E must complete the initial Driver CPC to obtain a full HGV licence. This includes theory tests, a practical demonstration (CPC Module 4), and case studies (CPC Module 2).
    1. CPC Periodic Training:
    • After the initial Driver CPC, complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years at approved centres. This ongoing training ensures professional drivers stay informed about industry changes and maintain a high level of competence.

 Cat C1+E Licence:

  • Allows driving vehicles weighing between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg with a trailer weighing more than 750 kg.

  • Ideal for the smallest goods transport vehicles (Cat C1) weighing between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg. It may have a trailer weighing up to 750 kg or no trailer at all.
  1. Cat C Licence (HGV Class 2):
  • Grants the ability to drive larger vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kg and pulling a trailer weighing up to 750 kg.
  1. Cat C+E Licence (HGV Class 1):
  • The highest level, allowing you to drive the largest HGV vehicles weighing over 3,500 kg, along with trailers exceeding 750 kg.
