Here’s a breakdown of the steps required to obtain your Professional HGV / LGV Licence:

  1. Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old to begin HGV / LGV training.
  2. Licence Requirements: Before starting HGV / LGV training, you must hold a valid UK car driving licence.
  3. Medical Examination: Undergo a medical examination conducted by a registered medical practitioner to ensure you’re fit for professional driving.
  4. Provisional HGV / LGV Licence: Apply for a provisional HGV / LGV licence from the DVLA, enabling you to undergo practical on-road training.
  5. Theory Test: Pass the HGV / LGV theory test, covering multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests to assess your knowledge of road safety and truck-related topics.
  6. Practical Training: Once theory training is complete, begin practical training with a DVSA-certified and experienced instructor to refine your driving skills.
  7. Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence): New Category C and C+E drivers must finish the initial Driver CPC, which includes theory and practical tests such as a case study (Module 2) and practical demonstration (Module 4).
