Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining Your Professional HGV / LGV Licence in the UK

  1. Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old to begin HGV / LGV training.
  2. Licence Requirements: Before starting HGV / LGV training, you must already possess a UK car driving licence.
  3. Medical Examination: Undergo a medical examination conducted by a registered medical practitioner to ensure you are physically fit for professional driving.
  4. Provisional HGV / LGV Licence: Obtain a provisional HGV / LGV licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). This licence is necessary before you can start practical training on the road.
  5. Theory Test: Pass the HGV / LGV theory test, which includes multiple-choice questions assessing your knowledge of road safety, traffic rules, and truck-specific information, as well as a hazard perception test evaluating your ability to identify and react to potential hazards.
  6. Practical Training: After passing the theory test, undergo practical training with a DVSA-certified instructor. This phase prepares you for the practical driving test and significantly increases your chances of passing on the first attempt.
  7. Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence): For Category C and C+E drivers, complete the initial Driver CPC, which includes theory tests covering advanced driving knowledge, a practical demonstration test (CPC Module 2), and a case studies test (CPC Module 4) assessing your understanding of real-life driving situations.
  8. CPC Periodic Training: After obtaining your initial Driver CPC, complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years at approved training centres. This ongoing training is essential to stay updated on industry changes and maintain a high level of competence.

Upon successful completion of all tests and training, you can upgrade your provisional licence to a full HGV licence and operate HGVs professionally on UK roads
