Here are the step-by-step instructions for getting your professional HGV/LGV Licence:

  1. Minimum Age: To start HGV / LGV training, you must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Licence Requirements: Before starting your HGV / LGV training, you need to have a car driving licence in the UK.
  3. Medical Examination: Pass a medical examination conducted by a registered medical practitioner to ensure you are physically fit for professional driving.
  4. Provisional HGV/LGV Licence: Obtain a provisional HGV / LGV licence before driving big trucks on the road. You can apply for this from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), allowing you to receive practical training on the road.
  5. Theory Test: Pass the HGV / LGV theory test, which includes multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests. This test assesses your knowledge of road safety, traffic rules, and truck-related information.
  6. Practical Training: After completing theory training and receiving DVSA test results, enter a real HGV vehicle for practical training. Learn from a DVSA certified and experienced instructor, increasing your chances of passing the practical test. Once ready, schedule the test, aiming to pass on your first attempt.
  7. Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence): For new drivers in Category C and C+E, complete the initial Driver CPC to obtain a full HGV licence. This step is mandatory, covering theory and practical tests, including a practical demonstration test (CPC Module 4) and a case studies test (CPC Module 2).
  8. CPC Periodic Training: After finishing the initial Driver CPC, complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to stay updated and maintain skills. This training must be undertaken at approved training centres, ensuring professional drivers stay informed about industry changes and uphold a high level of competence.

After successfully completing the tests and training, you can upgrade your provisional licence to a full HGV licence.
