Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining Your HGV / LGV Licence

  1. Minimum Age:
    • You must be at least 18 years old to start HGV / LGV training.
  2. Licence Requirements:
    • You need to hold a valid UK car driving licence before beginning HGV / LGV training.
  3. Medical Examination:
    • Pass a medical examination conducted by a registered medical practitioner to ensure you are physically fit for professional driving.
  4. Provisional HGV / LGV Licence:
    • Apply for a provisional HGV licence from the DVLA. This licence allows you to commence practical training on large trucks.
  5. Theory Test:
    • Pass the HGV / LGV theory test, which includes:
      • Multiple-choice questions assessing your knowledge of road safety, traffic rules, and truck-related information.
      • Hazard perception tests evaluating your ability to identify and react to potential hazards.
  6. Practical Training:
    • After passing the theory test, undergo practical training with a DVSA-certified instructor. This phase prepares you for the practical driving test and increases your chances of passing on the first attempt.
  7. Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence):
    • For Category C and C+E drivers, complete the initial Driver CPC. This includes:
