Steps to Obtain Your Professional HGV / LGV Licence:

  1. Minimum Age: Ensure you are at least 18 years old, the minimum age to start HGV / LGV training.
  2. Licence Requirements: Possess a valid UK car driving licence before initiating HGV / LGV training.
  3. Medical Examination: Undergo a medical examination conducted by a registered medical practitioner to confirm fitness for professional driving.
  4. Provisional HGV / LGV Licence: Apply for a provisional HGV / LGV licence from the DVLA, allowing practical on-road training.
  5. Theory Test: Pass the HGV / LGV theory test, covering multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests, evaluating knowledge of road safety and truck-related topics.
  6. Practical Training: After completing theory training, commence practical training with a DVSA-certified and experienced instructor to enhance practical driving skills.
  7. Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence): New Category C and C+E drivers must complete the initial Driver CPC, involving theory and practical tests, including a case study (Module 2) and practical demonstration (Module 4) 
  8. CPC Periodic Training: After initial Driver CPC, undertake 35 hours of periodic training every five years at approved centres to stay updated on industry changes and maintain competence.

Upgrade to Full HGV Licence: Successfully completing tests and training allows upgrading the provisional licence to a full HGV licence.

    • Allows driving vehicles weighing 3,500 kg to 7,500 kg with a trailer over 750 kg.
    1. Cat C1:
