Certificate of Professional Competence has been implemented across the EU to maintain set driving standards at certain height and maintain road safety. It is mandatory for all the professional drivers, lorries, coach etc to hold Driver CPC qualification and carry the card for their daily living.

Who needs Initial Driver CPC?

A person having LGV/PCV license (C1, C, CE, C1E, D, D1*, DE, and D1E*) do have ‘acquired rights’ up until 9 September 2013.The lorry drivers whereas get the privilege of acquired rights until 9 September 2014. Hence having acquired rights means you do not need initial driver CPC.

Minibus Drivers whose licenses are entitled with the statement that the card is not meant for hire or reward i.e code 101 , then it implies that they do not have acquired rights thereby making it mandatory for them to go for initial Driver CPC Qualification if they want to drive professionally.

Apart from the one who hold the C1 already, drivers who have PCV License but want to gain LGV License and also the one having LGV License but want to gain PCV License are required to take the initial driver CPC Course.

Drivers with acquired right who are willing to hold PCV License beyond 2013 and the one who wants to drive professionally with LCV beyond 2014 has to undertake periodic training.

How will it affect me?

If you are holding UK Car license post the year 1997 January, in order to get the driver qualification card,you have to pass the initial driver cpc test so as to drive professionally in the streets of Europe as professional lorry or coach driver or mini buses with minimum of 9 seats.

Initial Driver CPC Test includes a case study and you have to pass that theory test and the practical test which is included on top of the theory test. You also need to pass the practical driving test .

After passing the entire practical and theory test, you will get your Driver Qualification Card post to which you have to complete 35 hours periodic training at regular interval for the next consecutive five years in order to keep the Driver CPC Qualification.

A transport manager’s CPC is a separate qualification for the one we offer who wants to operate their own fleet. However though holding a transport manager’s CPC ,one who wants to drive professionally as part of their job will still need to carry Driver CPC.

What are the benefits ?

If you are holding UK Car license post the year 1997 ,then you have to pass the initial driver cpc test in order to get the Driver qualification Card .Unless you have this card, you are not allowed to drive professionally as a lorry, bus. or coach driver on lorries of 3.5 tons or upwards or minibuses with more than 9 seats.. However if you do not choose to be a professional driver,you can just hold the LGV/PCV driving license which constitutes of three tests.

Module 1 ? Multiple Choice Questions & Hazard Perception Video Clips

One hundred multiple choice questions (the pass mark will be 85) and the 19 hazard perception video clips with 20 score-able hazards (the pass mark will be 67 out of 100). The two tests take a total of 2 ? hours to complete, and can be taken one after the other on the same day or on a separate day and in any order.

Module 2 ? Driver CPC Case Study Theory Test

This is a computer based test with case studies based on real life scenario .Such case studies are set to help you evaluate real life encounter you might face in daily life on roads. The purpose is to test your reasoning skill and your knowledge to put your skill on practical ground. Questions are framed by the experts in the industry and are given in different patters like multiple choice or clicking on an area or photograph or by writing short answers so that you are asked to answer in different ways to test your logical reasoning skill and consistency.

Your test comprises 7 case studies with six to eight questions in each section with a total score of 50 out of which 40 is the pass mark. The test duration is one and half hours. The test can be held on same test center as module 1 and arranged on same day but separately. Module 1 or 2 can be conducted randomly in any order.

Module 3 ? Practical Driving Test

You can sit on the practical driving test only after you have passed Module 1.You are not allowed to sit your practical driving test (module 3) unless you have passed Module 1.

At the time of practical on road driving test , you will be suggested to adopt eco-safe method of driving .This will be evaluated by your examiner. This displays your driving skill in ecofriendly manner and has control on your vehicle in sync with the eco standards .If you fail to do so, this will be noted and recorded on the test form. Hence you will be provided more information and ecofriendly awareness at the end of the test.

Actual on-road driving time for all rigid categories will be a minimum of 1 hour to give examiners the opportunity to assess a candidate’s driving in more varied traffic conditions and on a wider variety of roads.

LGV Demonstration Test Apperatus Module 4 ? Driver CPC Practical Demonstration Test

As mentioned earlier, you can apply for the practical demonstration test only after you pass Module 2. Module 4 is a practical test focusing on vehicle safety.

Module 4 covers 5 topic areas. The pass marks is 15 out of every 20 points i.e 75% and overall you need to obtain 80%.

In the one and half hour duration, you need to show your knowledge and abilities in the below areas.

  • Loading vehicles abiding proper safety rules.
  • To maintain the security of the vehicle and its content.
  • Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants
  • To able to evaluate emergency situations.
  • Ability to avoid physical risk
  • Demonstrate your ability through a physical walk round vehicle safety check

LGV drivers are also asked to show their driving skill to secure loads on certain specially designed frames.We provide an exact replica of the examiners equipments for the tests that helps you to practice and keep learning.

We also provide Initial Driver CPC training for clients who have passed their test elsewhere (maybe outside the UK)

How to choose the modules as per the order?

It is compulsory that you pass Module 1 before taking Module 3 whereas you have to pass Module 2 before you take module 4.

In case you choose not to become professional driver, you will only need to pass Modules 1 & 3. If later you change your mind and wish to become a driver for living ,you will need to pass Modules 2 & 4.

Proof of holding Driver CPC.

After passing all the 4 modules, you will be sent a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which is issued without charge.

Your DQC is given back to you on the mentioned address in your driving license. So you need to update your details to the DVLA.It is a must to carry DQC while you are driving else you will be charged penalty in lieu to its absence and if you are a professional driver. If your DQC has been lost, stolen or damaged click here to find out what you must do [Report it to the DSA within 7 days and apply for a replacement card. There will be a fee to replace and issue new cards. To report your DQC card lost, stolen or damaged contact: Email (putting ‘DQC Enquiry’ in the subject field) or telephone 0300 200 1122. Once you have reported it, you will be able to drive for up to 15 days without a card while a replacement is sent to you. NB: if your card has been lost or stolen you must inform your employer.

After passing initial qualification

The validity of the initial Driver CPC is of five years. To renew your Driver Qualification Card you will need to complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years, before the expiry date to continue to drive professionally further. In case you aim to become ambulance technician or paramedic, you have to obtain LGV C1 License and complete blue light training. There you are not required to undergo Driver CPC Training or gain DQC UNLESS YOU TAKE C1 DRIVING AS A VOCATION.

Exemptions and concessions

There are exemptions from the Driver CPC for drivers driving vehicles:

  • Personal vehicles which are not used for commercial carriage purpose.
  • undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance purposes, or new or rebuilt vehicles not yet put into service
  • used in the training purpose for the person who wants to acquire driving license or Driver CPC.
  • VEHICLE THAT IS CARRYING GOODS OR MATERIALS WHICH IS USED BY THE DRIVER IN COURSE OF HIS WORK keeping in mind that driving the vehicle is not the principal activity or profession of the driver.
  • not exceeding 45km/h of maximum authorized speed.
  • used by, or under the control of, the armed forces, civil defence, the fire service, and forces responsible for maintaining public order, which includes ambulance technicians and paramedics after they have completed their blue light training
  • used in states of emergency or assigned to rescue missions.
